Remember

This poem has many elements to it.  It talks about past experiences that shape and rebuild you; how who you are is in essence not what happens to you but how you cope with the environment that tries to tear you apart.  Remember the people that meant something in your life, and why they mean so much to you.

Remember
The tidal waves that wash over your very existence
The coral that strips you from the core
The child that jump ropes with your insides
When your outsides give in

The light that burns bright
The one that holds your heart
The light of your life
When all else is dark

Who you are
Where you’ve been
Who you’ve seen
What they mean

Why you cared
Dared
Tried
Defied

Thursdays
The burnt meals you cooked
The nights of takeout
And the “I love you” that will never grow mold or ever expire

Bad haircuts
Halloween
Easter egg hunts
Your childhood

Your past
Your present
Pray for your future
